What is Qigong?

 

The practice of Qigong originated in China and evolved over thousands of years as a system for improving health, increasing energy and revitalising the body and mind.

The practice involves postural exercises and slow gentle movements together with focused breathing.

There are many forms of Qigong practised and taught throughout the world. Some are more dynamic and designed to enhance martial art skills whilst others are gentle and simple with an emphasis on health and wellbeing.


Why practice Qigong?

Qi loosely translates as ‘energy’ or ‘breath’ and gong as ‘work’ or ‘exercise’ so having a simple daily practice or going to a class is a way of improving the flow of energy and breath in and around your body.

By practicing qigong you are regularly cleansing the energy of the body in the same way that you wash or shower to clean your physical body.

With a qigong practice you can:

  • Improve overall mental and physical health

  • Relax the mind, calm thoughts and ease anxiety

  • Strengthen and tone muscles

  • Improve mobility, co-ordination and balance

  • Reduce mental and physical tension

  • Improve sleep
